He's a Gem 8/17/2009
Awesome Gem is having yet another stellar year, finishing second by a diminishing 3/4-length in the $300,000 Long Acres Mile Handicap (G3) on August 16th.
His patented closing punch from near the middle of the track fell just short after spotting the field more than 10 lengths in the one-mile event on Emerald Downs' conventional dirt oval. Final time was a blistering 1:33.2 after fractions of :44 and 1:07.3
"He is such a gallant horse," said Martin O'Dowd, Runnymede Farm's general manager. "We at Runnymede and Peter Callahan are so proud of him." Callahan and Runnymede are co-breeders of the 6-year-old gelded son of Awesome Again.
Awesome Gem in 2009 has raced on dirt, synthetic and turf, and has won or finished within 1 1/2 lengths of the winner all year. He was second by a length last out in the Grade I Eddie Read Handicap on Del Mar's turf after a successful trip to the winner's circle in allowance company at Hollywood Park.
Overall, Awesome Gem has a 27-5-11-3 and $1,413,682 record.
