Awesome Gem Wins Hawthorne Gold Cup

Awesome Gem will get a chance at a third Breeders’ Cup event after winning the $500,000 Hawthorne Gold Cup (GII) on October 3rd, 2009.
The six-year-old Awesome Again gelding carried the colors of West Point Thoroughbreds to his sixth victory and boosted his career stats to 30-6-11-3 and $1,695,682. The Hawthorne Gold Cup was his second graded stakes tally in his illustrious career.
Awesome Gem, bred by Runnymede Farm and Peter Callahan, galloped far back on the backside, then made steady progress to reach the leaders in late stretch to win by 1 ¼ lengths in the mud. Final time for the mile-and-quarter test was 2:04.36.
Awesome Gem finished third in the Breeders’ Cup Classic (GI) in 2007, and sixth in the Breeders’ Cup Mile (GI) in 2008.
