Following a very pleasing Keeneland September sale in which Runnymede sold yearlings to buyers in the United States, Europe and Asia, the farm is offering three colts at the Tattersalls October sale, Europe’s premier yearling auction that begins on October 5 in Newmarket, England.
Topping the Runnymede consignment at Keeneland was the elegant First Samurai filly out of Adventure, by Unbridled’s Song, who was purchased for $450,000 by English agent Oliver St. Lawrence on behalf of Fawzi Nass of Bahrain. The filly, a half sister to Irish Group 2 juvenile winner and Group 1-placed Laughing Lashes, will be trained in England, St. Lawrence said.
Four-time Eclipse Award winning trainer Todd Pletcher, buying for his own account, purchased Runnymede’s Kitten’s Joy filly out of Claire’s Smile, by Carson City, for $95,000. American owners George and Lori Hall acquired the farm’s Smarty Jones colt out of Romp and Stomp, by Olympio, for $70,000.
Katsumi Yoshizawa, a successful Japanese pinhooker, bought the Bernardini colt by Zappeuse for $140,000.
“The sale exceeded my expectations,” said Runnymede President Brutus Clay. “The horses that had good physicals and were well bred sold for good prices.”
Just as exciting to Runnymede as the sale of horses to prominent figures in racing is the farm’s decision to keep two very promising youngsters for racing.
The bay Rock Hard Ten colt out of Kith N Kin, by Spinning World, will be campaigned by Runnymede Chairman Catesby W. Clay in partnership with longtime farm client Peter Callahan. The athletic gray Exchange Rate filly out of Miss Forest City, by Coronado’s Quest, will be raced with a partner new to Thoroughbred racing. The filly is from the female family of Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Super Saver and sire Mutakddim.
“We’re thrilled with the horses that we kept to race and are excited to share with our partners the joy of racing,” Clay said.
At Tattersalls, Runnymede is represented in Book 1 by Hip 82, an Arch colt out of Avaricity, by Carson City, and Hip 143, a Danehill Dancer colt out of Capilla Bonita, by Pleasant Colony. In Book 2 at Tattersalls, Runnymede will offer Hip 143, a colt by Rock of Gibraltar out of Tis Me, by Notebook.
