Gunning found herself in the winner’s circle yet again! The four-year-old daughter of Gun Runner out of Grandview Equine’s Big Brown mare, Puca, won a $104,000 allowance race for trainer Kenny McPeek at Oaklawn Park yesterday, March 9th. Breaking from post seven, Gunning, ridden by Francisco Arrieta, found herself in the four spots, just off the pace. The pair advanced forward, going three wide to challenge the leaders late in the urn, staying out of the wait of post nine who pulled up and vanned off. Once Gunning was in the home stretch, it became a duel to the finish between herself and the eight post for the last furlong. The tenacious filly pulled ahead and won by a neck. A very exciting race! Congratulations to the owner and breeder, Grandview Equine. Gunning now has an incredible record of 5-2-1-1! We can’t wait to see her run again soon!
It was a big weekend for the produce of Puca! Mage, the now three-year-old colt by Good Magic ran in the Fountain of Youth Stakes (Gr. 2) at Gulfstream Park on March 4th. Hitting the starting gate to get away last, and bumping with the sixth post, Mage did not have the start one could hope for. After recovering, the colt, ridden by Javier Castellano, rushed the pace, going five wide around the first turn. Using this outside position, Mage advanced past tiring foes, turning for home nearly even between two competitors. Once in the upper stretch, Mage fell behind the leaders after angling outward. Finishing behind the winner 6 ¾ lengths in fourth place. It was a tough race for the colt, competing against more seasoned three-year-olds who are on the Derby trail. Mage had his first start at the end of January, breaking his maiden in a seven-furlong maiden special weight. Congratulations to all of Mage’s connections. Exciting times are ahead for this colt!
