Collected steam rolled hisfour rivals in the Precisionist Saturday, powering clear to an ultra-impressive 14-length victory over fellow Bob Baffert pupil Cat Burglar. Breaking sharply, the heavy favorite pressed from a close-up second as ATDN Rising Star Donworth (Tiznow) ticked off opening splits of :23.48 and :46.80. Collected overtook that rival on the backstretch and immediately slammed the door, powering clear under a motionless Martin Garcia to win as he pleased. We were going to run him in the [GI] Gold Cup [at Santa Anita], but he just wasn't working as well as I would have wanted for that, Baffert remarked. This middle distance is more his thing and I can see he reacts better. As long as I keep him like this, he's going to be really tough to beat. The Hall of Famer added, I've always thought that when I get him to Del Mar I might try him on the turf, he was bred for it. We'll get him down there and work him and see. Winner of the GIII Sham S. and GIII Coolmore Lexington S. last term, Collected finished a head-scratching 10th in a sloppy renewal of the GI Preakness S. last May, after which he was shelved for the remainder of the season. Returning to the races in Arcadia Apr. 1, he registered a facile victory in the Santana Mile and returned just three weeks later with an equally effortless score in the nine-panel GII Californian S. Pedigree Notes: Collected, a $150,000 KEESEP yearling turned $170,000 OBSMAR juvenile, has a 3-year-old full-brother named Industrialist, who summoned $300,000 from Zayat Stables at last term=s Fasig-Tipton March Sale. The chestnut is also trained by Baffert and finished sixth in his lone start Feb. 25. Helena Bay has a yearling colt by Lookin at Lucky and produced a Hard Spun colt Apr. 2 of this year.
