Epona Bay Breaks Her Maiden at Turfway Park
Friday, February 25, 2022

February 24, 2022: The stage was set for Epona Bay to have her first career victory in the one and one sixteenth mile Maiden Special Weight on the all-weather track at Turfway park on Thursday night. The flashy chestnut filly by American Pharoah out of Runnymede's Helena Bay is owned in partnership with Peter J. Callahan and Three Chimneys Farm.  Trained by the great Kenny McPeek, the filly had a total of five career starts before her victory at Turfway, including two seconds. Jockey Alex Achard was at the reins as the pair broke from post position four out of a field of ten, hanging close to the back of the pack, but had a good position between horses in the backstretch. At the last turn, the filly found herself running wide, was able to rally and pass her competition late in the stretch, pulling ahead by ¾ of a length. A very exciting race until the very last second! Congratulations to all of the filly’s connections!
