Rossa Ryan can rest easy after taking advantage of big chance on Duke Of Hazzard
Monday, August 26, 2019

Rossa Ryan admitted to having a sleepless night ahead of his big chance on Duke Of Hazzard in the Group 2 Celebration Mile at Goodwood.

It was not only nerves but also not wanting to leave anything to chance having been given the opportunity to deputise for PJ McDonald on the Fitri Hay-owned three-year-old.

“I didn’t sleep great last night and spent a lot of time on my tablet, working out what might happen and how the race would go,” said Ryan, 19, who is in his first year after riding out his claim.

"This is what I get up every morning for and it meant a lot to me to be given such an opportunity.

"I was boxed in on the rail but when I got out I was fairly confident I would get to Oisin [Murphy, Happy Power] in the final furlong."

Duke Of Hazzard, who was supplemented for the £133,250 race, was continuing his rapid rise this year with a third straight win, defeating runner-up Turgenev by three-quarters of a length.

Having overcome a foot problem together with the addition of blinkers the three-year-old has been transformed and holds a Group 1 entry in the Prix du Moulin at Longchamp.

Happy Power finished third for leading jockey Oisin Murphy, while 2-1 market leader Skardu came home a well-beaten fourth.
