With a bullet workout under her girth, our graded stakes winner Bizzy Caroline is set to start in the $100,000 Mint Julep Handicap (G3) over 1 1/16 miles on the Churchill Downs turf on June 2.
The race, which has drawn a sharp field of nine including Grade 2 winner and near millionaire Tapitsfly, will mark the second start of 2012 for Bizzy Caroline, who did not seem to relish Keeneland’s Polytrack when third in an allowance on April 26, her initial effort on a synthetic surface.
Yet on May 26, the four-year-old daughter of Afleet Alex, who races for Runnymede Chairman Catesby W. Clay and trainer Ken McPeek, worked a half-mile at Keeneland in :46.20, fastest of the day.
Bizzy Caroline may not have to face Tapitsfly, who won the 2009 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf, in the Mint Julep. Trainer Dale Romans told Churchill Downs officials that he might withdraw that daughter of Tapit in favor of the Just A Game Stakes (G1) at Belmont Park on June 9.
Others entered for the Mint Julep include Snow Top Mountain, a Grade 1-placed winner of three stakes who is in foal to champion Blame, and another three-time stakes winner, Ravi’s Song, who is in foal to leading sire Distorted Humor.
Bizzy Caroline will start from the rail and will be ridden by Manoel Cruz. She has proven she likes the grass in Louisville; she won the Regret Stakes (G3) and finished second in the Mrs. Revere Stakes (G2) last year on the Churchill turf.
