Harlocap is back in action! The four-year-old Justify colt out of Breed First’s mare, Mezinka found himself in the winner’s circle once again last week. The dark bay returned to training with Steve Asmussen after some much needed rest and relaxation post his three-year-old year only to have a disappointing start in an allowance race in January. Needing a comeback, Harlocap was entered last Friday, February 16th in a one and one eighth mile allowance race at Oaklawn. Leaving the three post with Keith Asmussen on his back, the colt tripped slightly right out of the gate, but recovered quickly to stalk the pace remaining three wide through the first turn. In the backstretch, Harlocap kept his outside position, trailing the leaders and waiting for the right time to make his move. Heading into the final turn, Asmussen and Harlocap swung past the leaders, and broke fast past his foes in the stretch toward home giving those behind him no time to catch up to him and battle for the lead. The pair seamlessly cleared the finish line two- and three-quarter lengths ahead of the competition. Among these competitors was King Russell who finished second in the Arkansas Derby; a race that was less than successful for Harlocap. It was sweet revenge for our colt. Congratulations to all of his connections! This was a great win for Harlocap and a nice update for Mezinka!
